Questlove DJ Set @ East Village – 19th August

Questlove DJ Set @ East Village – 19th August

Few names in music carry quite as much kudos of that of our headline DJ ?uestlove. He has worked with such a phenomenal array of talent while always leaving his own distinctive mark on each one. The list reads like a who’s who of modern Hip-Hop & Soul; Jay-Z, Al Green, Erykah Badu, J-Dilla, Common, Joss Stones & De La Soul to name just a handful. All this before we mention The Roots for whom this is an official after party for the live show at Hammersmith Apollo.

As a drummer he is a funky metronome that has brought to life so many tracks originally created through samples, drum machines and computers. Just check out his leadership of the ever morphing group of musicians that calls itself the “Illadelphonics” on Jay-Z’s unplugged album (Roc-A-Fella) and Madison Square performance in “Fade To Black” (Paramount) or at “Dave Chapelle’s Block Party” (Rogue Pictures) for an example of this. As a producer, both on his own and as part of the Soulquarians alongside J-Dilla, Q-Tip & Ali Shaheed Muhammad, his musical knowledge and understanding has seen him bring the classic Al Green sound bang up to date on “Lay It Down” (Blue Note) as well as bring the very best out of performers like D’Angelo & A Tribe Called Quest.

He’ll be making the most of all of these phenomenal attributes as he blesses The Doctor’s Orders crowd to what, if last year’s show was anything to go by, is sure to be a real treat for all Soul and Hip-Hop fans alike. With only 350 tickets available this is sure to be another packed house so grab your ticket now and get there early to get your spot on the dance-floor.

Birthm4rk Interview

Thanks for passing by www.darealbiz.com. Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you have released to date.
Hi, im Birthm4rk, a west midlands based artist, i write songs and rap, i can also hold a good note lol yeah ive been doing music for over 10 years started of in drum and bass then garage, then i found myself properly when i started writing to hip hop, i put out 2 mixtapes when i was like 15 – 18 then another when i was 20, now im 26 i put out another called MY LIFE MY CRIMES MY CRYS just before my 2 birthday, songs on the mixtape can be up to a year old but since im doing alot myself it takes longer to get things done.

Where do you live and what is it there? What’s the main Hip-Hop radio show in your city?
I live in wolverhampton, and main hip hop shows what come to mind are done by Dj springa on irie fm.

When did you start making music and more importantly why did you decide to make music?
I started making music at 16/17, the reason i started was bascially i found it easier to speak through my music and be honest.

When did you release your first song and what was the response like?
lol my 1st song wow good question i think the response was 50/50 because it showed me and my friends could do it but the problem was we were rapping amercian since thats what we grew up listening to so it was imprinted in our minds without us even knowing it took me a while to break out of it like a good few years thats why between 20-26 i was trying to get rid of the USA tounge.

How you would you describe your musical style and swagger?
i would describe my musical style as unique, i sound like nobody and rap like nobody if you listen to the game now alot of the rappers sound the same with the same flows etc all saying the same thing, as for swagger i keep it rahbarn lol HK blakez mode. lol

Let’s talk about your latest project. Where can we get it, who features and what label is it on?
you can get my lastest project from datpiff/downloadamixtape/sendspace/Hoodtapes.co.uk plus more but those are the main sites where you can just type Birthm4rk in and it will come up. Alot of my features come from the west midlands alot of underground rappers.

How long did it take to create and finish?
About a year and a half, due to alot of different problems it took too long and i kinda go sick of it so i just got it finished and now ive moved on to working on another and a EP plus other material which i will just put out there, i get bored quick and im never happy so i always gotta make new music.

If was in the streets and you came up to me with your latest release to try and sell it to me, what would you say? What major points would be in your sales pitch?!!
I would be like, its fresh’ real’ raw’ entertaining’ and im brining it back to how mixtapes used to be with it being mixed thats why its called a mixtape so you can put it on in your car or yard and bump the shit like your in a club……..

What would you consider to be your biggest track to date?
Ive had a few but i would say When the sun goes down check it out on youtube Birthm4rk, when the sun goes down, no-one who is unsigned or undergound is and has made a song like it if i was signed or someone who was signed did it i really do think it would of went number 1 or at least in the top ten and another was a hood banger called country monks with talent from the west midz featuring i think i had about 10 people on the track and they both have videos check them out.

Being totally honest, do you still buy music? If so where do you get your CD’s from?
Yeah i buy music i see it as you cant expect to be in the game and make money if your not willing to support the game’ its like buying a car or getting in your friends car how you gonna get about if you got no money for petty!

Do you like any other styles of music outside your genre?
i dont even listen to the music i make like to much hip hop, i listen to rock, bashment and dance music only now and again i will listen to hip hop and thats only because everyone is famous and gangsters theses days saying the same shit.

So how can promoters book you for shows and what does your live show entail?
I will be totally honest ive been performing since i was like 13 and as a artist i would say thats where im best at is performing, people can book me just by calling my number 07702334073 or adding my bb 230753FD get @ me direct.

Do you think illegal downloads are killing the music industry or does it help artists to get out there?
Both’ but more on the side its killing it because its our or some peoples living and without getting paid for there talent aka job things start messing up.

Good luck for the future. Anything you want to add before you go?
Thanks and Bless for the interview, you can follow me on twitter just sreach Birthm4rk and add me on fb Birthmark hk also add and sub to my youtube BIRTHM4RK1 and watch out for more videos and more musi, plus check out the clothing line MONEYMADE CLOTHING on the facebook.

A competition that EVERYBODY who enters can WIN

That’s right, can you believe it? We have put together a competition that has various levels of entry so if you are a video producer you can enter, if you are a graphic designer you can enter and if you are a marketer you can enter and all of you can win because we are not limiting the amount of winners or the prize. Wow! I hear you cry but there must be some sort of catch…? …Nope!

So, how does it work? Firstly you will need to register your interest; all we need is your name, contact details (including address and email), from there we will email you a url that is unique to you and now you are ready to start winning! Email me on ushop@sturbanclothing.com

You can then create an image, video, music track or an article, you could even just promote the url and every purchasing visitor you attract to our site we will give you 10% of whatever they spend. Visitors don’t have to spend immediately tracking last for 30 days so if at anytime they come back within that 30 days you win, how much you win depends on how hard you work and how many purchasing visitors you send us. What you can earn is uncapped and as an added bonus the person that creates the most sales will win a prize up to the value of the winnings they have accumulated.

We are happy to support you in this anyway we can and will publish the best attempts on our Social networks, site and maybe even newsletters, so to get started email me on ushop@sturbanclothing.com with your real name, address and contact details.

Nick Javas plans European tour and releases new video

You may remember Nick Javas from the excellent ‘Opportunity Knocks’ track that was produced by Hip-Hop legend DJ Premier, if not we have to say you really are missing out! Nick Javas injects an uplifting lyrical feel using clever wordplay and humour in a way that no one has done before, making him totally unique and diverse. This fact was probably one of the many reasons why DJ Premier signed him!

Here is the brand new video from Nick Javas which features the Nicci Silva on the hook reworking Madonna’s 1980’s classic ‘Material Girls’. This is a breath of fresh air in an era of blinged out rappers talking about swagger. He’s calling on the whole Hip-Hop scene here, asking for all the ‘Material Girls’ to please stop and bring back Hip-Hop to its essence. We love this and know you will too!

Nick Javas is currently planning a European tour and his management would love to hear from any show or club promoters interested in booking him. Check out these links…

VAIN grew up with the intimate musical influences of his parents who were both members of bands back in the 80’s. VAIN recalls as a kid, his mother would make him perform Slick Rick songs at all family functions. “The moment I knew folks were coming over, it was like a bell that rang in my head, asking, which song will I perform today?,” he chuckles.
After graduating high school in Queens, New York where VAIN was born and raised, he began working full time while continuing to aggressively pursue his music career. In 2004, VAIN’s father passed away and due to the loss, he channeled and refocused his energy into his music and has since been aggressively pursuing his musical career.

Inspired heavily by Hip-Hop music of the late 80’s and 90’s, VAIN admires artists such as NAS, Mobb Deep, Nature, and A Tribe Called Quest. In order to master his craft as a well-rounded artist, VAIN extensively immersed himself into developing his craft by listening to diverse records and pushing the envelope as an innovative writer. VAIN has mastered the lyrical balance of lethally fierce word play, witty social commentary, and poetic story telling. As he recollects, “eventually, I got nice and my first record touched radio in 2005. It was a joint called, ’Toss Da Paper’.”

Describing his own musical style, VAIN stated, “I believe I come from an educated yet street point of view, where I’m giving people insight into life. What I desire to accomplish through my music is to educate, inspire as well as entertain. I think I write from the heart first and then the mind. There is nothing in the entire world quite like performing and I simply can’t get enough of the euphoric musical high!” It is perfectly summarized in VAIN’s favorite quote, “music is an audio vibration of a person’s soul. ”

VAIN has opened for Hip-Hop artists including DMX, Fabolous, Foxy Brown, Corrupt and The Clipse. He has worked with some of Hip-Hop’s most sought after producers including Ryan Leslie, Teflon, P.F. Cuttin, Terrence Dudley, Jelly Roll and Fingers, just to name a few.

Stealf Presents Mista Flix – Conceptualized Deceit EP (Review)

More good stuff from producer Stealf’s Defacto Entertainment camp in the form of this quality five track fromUKrapper Mista Flix. This exciting new artist spits intelligent bars with an on-point delivery which compliments Stealf’s raw sounding Hip-Hop vibe. This deadly duo have gave up the goods here and what I like the most about it was the fact it works nice as a collection. My only gripe was there wasn’t enough, but I guess that’s a good thing! Good solid UK Rap.

“Old Times & Good Wishes” is the new single from acclaimed US emcee River Nelson, where he recounts his early days in the game, sending shouts to the crew he came up with, remembering their innocent love of hip-hop, complemented by suitably nostalgic production from Beat Thief and an ingenious video from director Eric Hudson which weaves video and photos from the 90′s, including classic footage of the Boogiemonsters, to poignantly capture the track’s mood.

This marks River Nelson’s first release with DowntownSoul, ahead of his second album with legendary hip-hop producer Lewis Parker, which they are currently recording in New York; due to be released by DowntownSoul & A World of Dusty Vinyl later this year.

River Nelson will also be performing live at Strawberry Fields Festival in the UK this August Bank Holiday (26th-28th). For more information visit the website at www.strawberryfieldsfestival.co.uk

Gage exclsuive interview

Thanks for passing by www.darealbiz.com. Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you have released to date.

My name is Gage , I’m from a group called Click Animosity. To date I have released my debut Ep Dead Angel / The Gospel which featured the homie Holocaust from Wu-Tang Killa Beez crew Black Knights , Ripshop , Deewu , Click Animosity + more. Click Animosity –Feeders Of The Flamez dropped last summer as out debut group release which featured the likes of  Slaine ,Craig G , Shabazz The Disciple , Lord Superb , Kevlaar 7 , Tragic Allies and many more. Both of those projects were soley released on Dj Extremidiz’ label “Metal Barz Recordings” out of Canada. Click Animosity is myself , Trust aka T.Iz.M.O.E. & Rhetoric (also from Evil Dead). There’s a lot of loose material out there floating around with all of us on it. We recently released our 90’s demotapes  from when we were known as V.H.S. Crew as a limited edition professionally pressed disc for our fam and closest supporters via First Son Records out of Ireland.

Where do you live and what is it there? What’s the main Hip-Hop radio show in your city?

I live around Boston Ma & for Underground Hip Hop shows we have 88.9 FM (WERS) which is a college radio station from Emerson College for Broadcasting etc. Also 94.5 FM (JAMN)  which has always leaned more towards the comercial side of Hip Hop and Rap music but also does have shows such as “Launch Pad” dedicated to underground Artists and fans. They’ve played Click Animosity before.

When did you start making music and more importantly why did you decide to make music?

I became inspired to write as a youth around the age of 12 which would be around the age of 91-92, I didn’t decide to start recorded poems/verses until about 1994 when I realized it was a realistic option. We would freestyle or even write to b side cassette singles and spit directly into karioke machines that had record options at first. Then certain members began to buy equiptment such as Technique 1200’s , SP 1200’S , track machines etc. That’s when we started having in house production and a real natural vibe along with an original sound.

When did you release your first song and what was the response like?

Well as far as anything reaching outside our own neigborhoods etc we started to release new material around 2007 and I would say the response was very encouraging and reconfirmed that we are both needed and wanted amonst our Hip Hop peers , community and supporters.

How you would you describe your musical style and swagger?

My style ranges. I do what I’m inspired to do , weather it’s the way a instrumental hits me , what I’m under the influene of at that point in time (lol) which is usually reality itself to my children , I could be influenced by stress , peace or new information aqcuired etc. My swagger is Universal. To know me is to know me and what I represent.

Let’s talk about your latest project. Where can we get it, who features and what label is it on?

This current project is called The Desolate Lands.  It features the likes of Click Animosity naturally , along with Access Immortal , Karniege , Fess Gotchu , Rasul Allah from Lost Children Of Babylon , Konflikk , Deewuallah , Justice from Black River Sound , Tragic Allies , Mami Uno , Holocaust from Wu and some others. A lot of dope production from DJ Extremidiz , Devampz , 7TH Galaxy , Prophet-One , Nite Boogie aka Funka Nite from NJ and many others. It will be available on itunes and many other digital retailers via Island Def Jam distro and definitely stocked in the Ughh dot com store for physical copies by way of Metal Barz Recordings.

How long did it take to create and finish?

Well this album has been a concept I’ve been working on since about 1996 and just never got around to working on until about 2007. I’ve dealt with a lot of different situations since this album was first concieved. The original studio we began recording in was cleaned out by burglars who basically set the recording proccess back zero when we were about 90% done with this and a few other projects. This album had been pushed back for awhile in order to release the Click Animosity – Feeders Of The Flamez album done and out to the people.

If was in the streets and you came up to me with your latest release to try and sell it to me, what would you say? What major points would be in your sales pitch?!!

I would say to you “This is the post nuclear/ post armageddon comapanion cd and the only thing you’ll require more than this , is water & Shelter.”

What would you consider to be your biggest track to date?

I would have to say that the Click Animosity song called Gramz Of Raw featuring Slaine of La Coka Nostra / Special Teamz has had an amazing response. All in all I would say the response to our while Click Animosity album has shown and proven that it’s considered to be a cult classic in many circles.

Being totally honest, do you still buy music? If so where do you get your CD’s from?

I’m a fan of Hip Hop FIRST & formost. I have the collection many Purist Dj’s can identify with. I’ve loved Hip Hop since 1987 when I 1st heard You Be Illin’ by Run DMC. My collection from that point til this date reflects that fact. I buy albums any & everywhere! I love used record stores (shout out to Cheapos in Central Square Cambridge Ma and many other spots)

Do you like any other styles of music outside your genre?

I was raised around everything from john Coltrane , The Beatles , Don Mclean and more. I like some Classic or Folk rock as a guilty pleasure and I have to say their message was very Hip Hop at the time. I love obscure Soul & R&B as well. It’s all good basically.

So how can promoters book you for shows and what does your live show entail?

Serious Show promoters can reach me/us via e-mail: Clickanimositybiz@gmail.com and can expect some real Hip Hop heads who are a representation of the era we come from and love.

Do you think illegal downloads are killing the music industry or does it help artists to get out there?

I think some people claim this and that and have a whole lot of opinions  about  Hip Hop music and the so called bad state it’s in. yet have contributed nothing money wise to support the game EVER. I would say everything in moderation. Why wouldn’t you want to own an album you can’t stop playing?

Good luck for the future. Anything you want to add before you go?

Thanks fot building. I would just like to add that this is just the beginning. We have a lot of solo albums , feature spots on other albums and a new Click Animosity album or 2 in the works. We’re seasoned veterans who’ve been in the shadows long enough. We’re here now. Peace from Click Animosity.
